THE SCRIPT | No Sound Without Silence Tour (Part 2)

I've been reliving The Script's concert by listening to their album and their older songs. It got me thinking.

Musicians who make their way the traditional way are such an inspiration to me - they stick to their art and chase their dreams, and for so many of them they come close to giving up before they get some kind of break. For many, they don't make it at all. But they take the risk - and I think that's such an amazing thing to do, to have the courage to say no to what everyone else thinks you should be doing, whether that's studying at uni or getting a "proper" job or something else entirely. I can only imagine what it's like to be almost broke, chasing your dreams and making music and just not getting anywhere - and the resilience they must have to setbacks and disappointment. If there's anything I can learn from them, it's to have courage and to take risks, even though it may cause pain and have no certain outcome, because you will always learn from the experience.

The Script were explaining Man on a Wire before they played it to us, and they kept saying that you had to be careful what songs you wrote in case you had to make a music video for it. Literally hanging from a wire. But as they said, you have to take risks in this world to get noticed, especially in this world where what used to be extraordinary has become ordinary and where so many people are multi-skilled that it's hard to stand out.

I'm so glad that The Script made everyone get their flashlights out on their phone and put it in the air. Seeing the arena light up was spell-binding and so intensely beautiful, as it always is. Their lead in to their final song made me emotional - they told us to live in the moment and enjoy the last song together, as too many people today live in the past or the future, or just online. This resonates with me so much, because it's just so true - we, in a digital world, are constantly attached to our mobile devices and so obsessed over recording or taking photos of events like concerts that we sometimes forget to just enjoy the moment because we're too busy recording it for someone else. At that point, we're not there for ourselves in that moment, but rather we're there to share the experience with our social network rather than the physical beings in the room with us. That sucks, if you think about it, yet so many of us are guilty of this.

I think something else that I've learnt over the last few months is that musicians and people in the media that are typically thought of as celebrities are just ordinary people who have their lives publicised, and they really are no different except the way they lead their lives. Even then, lesser known internet, music and media personalities are still like the rest of us except that their job requires them to be known.

I like how The Script referred to us not as fans, but as family. Jim Chapman refers to his viewers as his best friends. We're part of a community, a global one even if it an imagined community.

So I challenge you (and myself) to live in the moment. To live in the present, to live for yourself and with those around you. Spend money on experiences rather than material things if you have a choice, and create memories - memories that you can carry with you to remind you of all the beautiful things in life for all those bad times where you're close to giving up. Remember the highs, because you'll need them to get through the lows. Remember who your friends are, cherish them and make sure you let them know that you love and appreciate them as much as possible. Absorb the positivity and accept the negativity, but don't let it get you down. Love yourself. Be selfless, but selfish when you no longer have the capacity to give. Be inspired. But most importantly, stay true to who you are during the ups and downs - because there's only one you.

With love, Sarah x
